The Monday Melee Questions:

1. The Misanthtropic: Name something (about humanity) you absolutely hate.

The constant need to one up and be better than your friends and family.  Why must we constantly out do the ones we love and care for.

————————————————————–
2. The Meretricious: Expose something or someone that’s phony, fraudulent or bogus.

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it before, I’m going to say it again.  Pet Food.

If you love your pet, don’t feed them crap from the grocery store.   There are NO.  I repeat NO good foods sold in WalMart or the local grocery store.  And just because a food is sold at the Vet’s office does not make it the best choice (ie Hill’s Science Diet - read the label, you’ll be amazed at the crap thats in it!)

Companies like IAMS support animal testing (Their parent company is Proctor and Gamble - read more about their animal testing here)

Most pet foods are filled with horrible and un nessasary fillers.  Brewers rice (the rice left over in the beer brewing process) as example.  Would you eat ‘re used’ rice?

The first 5 ingredients should be MEAT.  Dogs and Cats are carnivors, and only eat vegetables because we have dictated that they need it.

Here is a list of companies who do not support animal testing

————————————————————–
3. The Malcontent: Name something you’re unhappy with.

My ear is plugged right now, and it will be a bitch to try to find a doctor to get it looked at.

————————————————————–
4. The Meritorious: Give someone credit for something and name it if you can.

Colin - for realising he is overworked and overtired.  He needs some time off, rest, and to get over his caffiene addicition.

————————————————————–
5. The Mirror: See something good about yourself and name it.

I have good taste in interior design, I just don’t have the money to see my ‘vision’ through

————————————————————–
6. The Make-Believe: Name something you wish for.

I wish I could talk and have conversations with my cats

Hey - I forgot to send you the doctor my mom went to. It’s in Hudson though, do you want the contact info?

Joey,

I would just so hate not to wear high heels! I wear them every day despite having had cancer of the tibia (Chondrosarcoma) and having had limb salvage surgery so that my tibia is now part bone part cement! So I can understand your vanity!! I’m worse than you are - I won’t even be seen out in flats! I’ll probably be buried in high heels - (cremated) but not for many years yet I hope!

Joey, I think you’re great, but I take issue with the pet food thing.

1) I’ve read the label on my dog’s food and I would be comfortable eating those same ingredients myself.

2) If you’re not testing pet food on animals, who do you suggest we test it on? Your choices are pretty much people or animals. Plants can’t eat pet food. Fungi can eat pet food, but you don’t learn much from a fungus’ food choice. Some protists can eat food, but they won’t teach you much either. And bacteria are so inherently different, even phagocytosis doesn’t do you much good here.

I’m not against responsible testing on organisms, but I’m also open to suggestions. So, what would you prefer we give food to before feeding it to the animals you’re trying so hard to protect?

3) Where you buy your food from is not as big a deal as what’s in it. You could make your pets food fresh everyday, but you’d have to buy that chicken or beef from somewhere.

4) Why should the first 5 ingredients be meat? What’s wrong with just chopped up chicken. One ingredient. If there are 50 ingredients and the first 5 only compose 25% of the content, it’s not as strict of a diet as if there are 8 ingredients, but only the first 3 are meat and comprise 65% of the content. “The first 5″ is a gross overgeneralization and completely arbitrary, but a good start.

Like I said, I think you’re great, so don’t take that as an attack. I just don’t completely agree.

Hey New Hoosier, long time no see. Hope your well.

1. What food do you feed your pet?

2. I’m talking poisions in bunny eyes, not taste tasting.

3. Where you buy it from DOES make a difference. Quality foods aren’t sold at WalMart. . . that is a fact!

4. When I say the first 5 ingredients should be meat. Meat by-products falls under this category. The rice, guleton, corn etc are not needed or nessasary for animals. These are fillers. Animals need the protein from the meat.

No worries, I don’t think you are attacking me.

j9,

I think being buried in High Heels might be the only place I could wear them without getting blisters!

Joey,
Yeah, I’m good. I hope you are as well. :-)
1) I feed my dog science diet, but the fact that you mentioned science diet only a coincidence. I wasn’t taking issue with a brand, rather the things I already pointed out.

2) Certainly no reasonable person is okay with poisioning bunny eyes.

3) I wouldn’t know about the quality of Wal*Mart’s pet food, as I don’t shop there. But the point was the label of ingredients is more important than the sign on the building.

4) It’s not entirely true that animals don’t need vegetables. The carnivores just get that nutrition from other consumers. This image depicts the amount of energy lost from one consumer to the next. Every level change costs 90% of available energy. This is why there are fewer top level predators in an ecosystem, because each one needs to eat enough food to compensate for this energey loss. By feeding carnivores both meats and plants, you are giving them the same nutrition but smaller portions. Reduction in food is desired because people don’t have the time to feed their pet at least 3 times a day. Most pets will either have a set amount for the whole day or get fed once or twice a day because they work. Most people also don’t have the time to cook food daily for their pets.

Yes, if you are feeding your dog more than 5 cups a day, the food has lots of fillers.

The food my dog eats is rated at minimum 20% protein and maximum 10% moisture. She gets just over 2 cups a day, has a gorgeous coat, and lots of energy. Some of that is because she’s young, but on crappy food it’s hard to have a nice coat and lots of energy.

Animals absolutely need protein, carbohydrates, and fats just like humans. The cells are extremely similar even if their bodies aren’t. Protein for muscles, hair, and nails. Carbohydrates for energy. Fat for energy storage, organ cushioning, and cholesterol for cell membranes.

Also, we (you and I) should stress that “people food” as in fried chicken, cookies, etc. should be avoided. Table scraps that are making Americans (and Canadians???) obese, and yet malnutritioned, are not healthy for pets.
