Graveyard Shift

Thankfully since strikes began in May, the 130 grounds workers of Notre Dame Cemetary in Montreal are back to work this week.  They will be working a 4 day work week, with continued striking on Fridays until a resolution can be hatched.

The grass and grounds have not been cut or maintained since the strike began in May.

More than 500 loved ones passed on are awaiting burial to their final resting place, currently being held in cold storage.

My thoughts go out to the families of the dead. . . .

Looking for Love in Montreal

8 09 2007

Lifted from the Montreal Gazette newspaper, many radio stations and television stations have been trying to help the lad who put a small ad classified section to find a woman he felt he had a connection to. . . .

Do you know the woman in the polka dot dress?

I WENT into D’Aversa restaurant on Saturday, June 9, 2007 with a group of friends and saw a beautiful blonde woman in a Marilyn Monroe inspired red and white polka dot dress. She also had a dozen red roses on her table as a salute from the restaurant and DJ for being the most beautiful woman the room. I spoke with her and danced with her. I felt we had an instant connection. She wanted to continue to dance but I broke off to collect a drink from my friends at the bar. When I returned to dance I was dismayed to find that she and her friend had left. I would love to have her call me at 928-234-2005 to see if there really was that connection.”

81-year-old Montreal nun found beaten to death

14 08 2007

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/galleries/prayeraids/images/3.jpg

Once in a while a news story happens that truly makes you sit back in your chair, take a deep breathe, and wonder about what kind of sickos are out there - and on our streets.

Montreal had one such story yesterday.

A frail elderly nun, who devoted her life God’s work, was senslessly murdered.

Who in their right (or wrong) mind could harm a nun?

Finnegan’s Market

4 08 2007

Colin and I went to Finnegan’s Flea Market today.

http://www.romeartlover.it/Portese8.jpg

Colin hates this stuff, but he did it anyways.  Because I like them.

I’ve been looking for chairs.  I’d like to buy 6 different and unique chairs, and refinish them the same.   I’ve always loved the look of the different chairs on “Friends”  in Monica’s kitchen.  Currently I have the SAME chair in different colours, now I want DIFFERENT chairs all in black.

Colin vowed not to buy anything all day, and in the end - I ended up chairless, and Colin ended up with 2 jars of homemade steak seasoning and a book about the FBI (with the Forward by J.Edgar Hoover)  Total cost for the day, $9.00.

After the market we went to water, and watched the wind surfers and jet skiers on Oka beach. . .

It was a beautiful hot day, and it was nice to get some more colour in my face.

So We Were Down In Snowden . . . .

7 06 2007

Colin and I went to dinner with Chow and Alex tonight to Kanda Sushi in Snowden.

On the walk back to the car after dinner we saw the oddest thing.

A Hasidic Jewish Bachelor Party, at 8:30pm on a Thursday.   Of course the backdrop to the shenanigans was a smoked meat joint called ‘Benny’s’

Gotta love Montreal.

Snow?

16 05 2007

Tonight Montreal is expecting SNOW.? Yes, that is correct.? This evening, Wednesday 16th May 2007, we are expecting a small amount of snow (less than a cm)

WTF!

Walking in Heels

30 04 2007

I love the look of a hot pair of heels.  Be damned if I can walk in them, though.

I suppose the irony of the fact I can’t walk in heels is my years and years of dance lessons and competitive dance.

I danced in “Character Shoes” which were high-heels with straps.  I did kick lines, and Can-can, pirouettes et all and never a problem walking in them.

I also took 4 years of Pointe.  You’d think with the rigorious routines you subject your feet to in Pointe, walking in heels would be a breeze.  No dice for Joey.

Last weekend when my In Laws were here my Mother in Law bought me a hot little pair of sandles (see below)

image hosted by image shack.us

I love them, but as with any pair of heels, I have to bring a back up pair of flats when the pain gets to much.

I blister easily.  What can I say.

I wore them to Gibby’s and all the walking around we did by the Old Port, but on Sunday when we went to Church - I couldn’t even keep them on for the service.  I slid them under the pew in front of me.  I hope they weren’t ‘pew’ themselves.

We went to Tim Horton’s for lunch and onto Ste Anne De Bellevue to walk along the boardwalk, needless to say, on came the flats.

The day after P&K’s wedding we all know about the high heel boot fiasco, I sprained my ankle really badly (infact i’m still in a bit of a pain from it) - after my tumble, on came the flats.

For P&K’s wedding, I bought a great pointy pair of heels, and a back up pair of flats that looked the same.  During the ceremony I had to walk up the little staircase, and I knew I didn’t want to chance fate - on came the flats.

Then walking back to the car between the service and reception, well, I couldn’t keep up with everyone in my heels.  On came the flats.

Then there was the dancing.  I couldn’t be expected to give my heart out to the Village People’s YMCA in heels, could I?  On came the flats.

Even at my own wedding, on came the flats.  I switched to a silvery pair of flip flops from my heels just after the ceremony and pictures.

Colin can always tell when I’m uncomfortable in shoes, he says I go from having my shoulders back and standing tall and confident to a hunched over waddling penguin with piegon feet.

Perhaps I’m only destined to enjoy LOOKING at fabulous heels, and never wearing them.

Sigh. .  . . . .

St Anne De Bellevue

22 04 2007

Today we went to West Side Bible Church for Sunday Service.  Its been a long time since I went to meeting.  A very different experience that MGH.  Lots of instruments, light shows, power point & hand waving.  Certainly a little more lively than I remember Church being when I was little attending St Paul’s in Milton.

We then headed to St Anne de Bellevue, being the first beautiful and glorious weekend, we walked along the wooden boardwalk.  Right up water paths to where the Ottawa River meets the St Laurent.

Gibby’s!

21 04 2007

Tonight we went for a meal at the Old Port in Montreal at the historic 200 year old Gibby’s Restaurant.

Anyone from Montreal understands that Gibby’s is an institution of culinary delights.

Gibby’s is a steakhouse, with the most amazing cuts of beef going.

Its the kind of steak you talk about, days, weeks, months, years later!  Trust me, its that good.

Mrs Graham had the Beef Wellington, I had the New York Sirloin, and both Colin and Mr Graham had the Gibby’s Cut steak.

Awesome meal.

After the meal, we walked along the boardwalk on the Old Port, and talked to the crew of the HMCS Halifax ship which was docked at the Port.

Wear a White Ribbon for Virginia Tech Massacre Victims

17 04 2007

As a Canadian, and now someone who lives in Montreal - The White Ribbon Campaign is something we are all aware of, and take part in every year. The white ribbon campaign is specifically Men Againist Violence Aganist Woman.

This campaign was started in 1991 after the school masscare at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.  A lone gunman, Marc Lepine,  killed 14 woman before killing himself on December 6th, 1989.
