Sliding Door Debate: Should Cats be Indoor or Outdoor Pets?

30 11 2006

My Moggies lead a life of luxury.

Good food, always clean fresh water, lots of litter, warm bed and ‘cushie’ pillows to rest on.

Its a good life.

When I got Manny, the people I got him from were actually very surprised that I planned on keeping Manny as an Indoor Only cat. All their cats are indoor/outdoor cats.

I said that they are Domestic Cats. . . .I’d worry about their safety, especially because we live fairly near a busy road. Although I suspect that instinct is still very prevalent in all domestic cats, their total skills for survival isn’t what their were a hundred years ago or more.

I suspect that Minou would do fine. She is by far the most level-headed of the trio. Marty and Manny are boys, and frankly not as smart as Minou. I’d worry that they wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves, or find their way home. Minou would probably never come back once let outside. . . I think she plans her escape daily.

I’m not against taking the moggies out on the lawn in the summer (which I did this year), or letting them sit in an open window, but I’m not prepared to just let them roam.

Diseases aside, what about predators or as mentioned before the road?

I love them so much that I’d be heartbroken if any harm at all came of them. . . . . .

So, the question is, should cats be indoor or outdoor pets?

Christmas in July, I mean the first weekend of December

30 11 2006

?Christmas in July

This weekend we are back in Milton for the Graham/McQuillian Christmas.? Jo Ann and Andrejz (man I wish?I could spell his name without going to look up how to spell it. .? . sorry dude, I know thats wrong) are expecting their first baby on the 23rd of December, and to ensure that they get to participate in all the family merriment, we pushed Christmas earlier. . . .

This should actually be a good thing, as now (*fingers crossed*) I won’t have any blow outs with either family about who we spend more time with.

More on the festivities later. . .? . .

How Many Pets is too Many Pets?

29 11 2006

cute kitty

I’ve been noticing alot lately about people who have a TON of pets. . .  .perhaps I am more sensitive to it as I have recently added to my own moggie crew.  I now have three cats.

I work with a lady who now has 3 dogs, 1 cat and a parrot.  Is that too many?  She can sustain her household adequetly, and wouldn’t deny any of them medical treatment.

What about ‘S’ from a previous (rant) entry?  She now has 2 dogs and 2 cats, and barely enough money to support her household, and if you read the rant (here:  http://joeymoggie.wordpress.com/2006/11/26/how-much-moola-would-you-spend-on-your-moggies/) you know that she has, and might deny vet services.

So the question is, how many pets is too many pets?

I personally believe that it is a case-by-case situation, obviously things like

  • Kids
  • Type of House
  • Amount of Time Home
  • Total Household Income
  • Experience etc etc etc. . . . .       should all be taken into consideration. . . . .

Handbags & Gladrags

29 11 2006

So Colin says to me this morning as I was sitting on the bed petting Marty.

“You know if Marty was a person, I bet he’d wear designer clothing and have a Prada purse”

cat in a dress

I scrunched up my nose and drew my eyes thin, shurged my shoulders and said ”hun?”

Colin is convinced that Marty is a sissy. His personality is much calmer and gentle than Manny’s. In short, Colin thinks Marty is a pretty boy and Manny is a belching truck driver (Not that all truck drivers fall into this generalization).

I perhaps coddled Marty quite a bit when he was a kitten, where we are far less gentle with Manny. (Experience with kittens I guess). I admittedly dress up the moggies more than I should, but I’ve always felt that Marty actually enjoyed being dressed up.

As a kitten he wore a Camoflauge bandana rather than a collar, and I am forever telling him how handsome he is. (And let me tell you, he is very very handsome).

When he went for his yearly exam last month Marty sat with me in his harness and leash in the waiting room, no need to put him in a carrier. Everyone kept coming up to him, petting him, cooing over him and commenting on how handsome he is. (Again, I have to say that he is very very handsome) He just sat there purring, occasionally looking up at me with what I am convinced was a very content smile.

We have this horrible brass siding on our fireplace (its on the ‘to do’ list) often I see Marty staring at his reflection. Grooming himself and then looking at himself again. Clean, Rinse, Repeat. Perhaps he is just vain, I like to think he is conscience of his appearance and appreciates good grooming. Very virtuous trait in men if you ask me.

Marty refuses to full-on play fight with Manny. He will apese the little cat for a few minutes, and then like a pansy with a handbag, (as suggested by Colin), he flees for higher ground.

Colin loves how rough and tumble Little Cat is, and wants Marty to be tougher. I love that Marty is so gentle and attentive. Marty is always right by my side. He sleeps with me every night, and is the first moggie to greet me in the morning.

I suspect that Manny will be much more calm once I lop off his 2 veg. I’m counting days.

All I can say is, Marty, any time you want to go shopping for handbags, I’m right there with ya buddy.

The Office Doors Unlock at 8:30

28 11 2006

I like to get to work at 8:00am, even though I don’t start until 9am.  That gives me time to answer some personal emails, (write a blog entry or two), get my desk sorted for the day.  Its quiet here then.

The Procaps building is in the final stages of the renovation (we added on a new wing) and there are service people here who keep ringing the freaking doorbell, now they don’t just press it once, they press it like 10 times.   I think they see me, and are trying to irritate me.  Mission successful.

Part of my just wants to ignore them, to spite them.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
