Sliding Door Debate: Should Cats be Indoor or Outdoor Pets?

My Moggies lead a life of luxury.
Good food, always clean fresh water, lots of litter, warm bed and ‘cushie’ pillows to rest on.
Its a good life.
When I got Manny, the people I got him from were actually very surprised that I planned on keeping Manny as an Indoor Only cat. All their cats are indoor/outdoor cats.
I said that they are Domestic Cats. . . .I’d worry about their safety, especially because we live fairly near a busy road. Although I suspect that instinct is still very prevalent in all domestic cats, their total skills for survival isn’t what their were a hundred years ago or more.
I suspect that Minou would do fine. She is by far the most level-headed of the trio. Marty and Manny are boys, and frankly not as smart as Minou. I’d worry that they wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves, or find their way home. Minou would probably never come back once let outside. . . I think she plans her escape daily.
I’m not against taking the moggies out on the lawn in the summer (which I did this year), or letting them sit in an open window, but I’m not prepared to just let them roam.
Diseases aside, what about predators or as mentioned before the road?
I love them so much that I’d be heartbroken if any harm at all came of them. . . . . .
So, the question is, should cats be indoor or outdoor pets?
